Say It in German: Version Control

die Versionsverwaltung (pl. -en) – version control

Waltung means “management”. Versionsverwaltung. Version control, or version management.

This is another straightforward translation. Essentially, this is the management of changes made to source code. In a sense, each change means that there is a new revision. (This is like having a new version, but “version” mostly refers to something that is complete.)

Even in the past, before the computing age, there was also a need to number versions, such as the different editions of a book.

But now, this is especially necessary for software developers working together in teams. That way, every contributor is able to make changes to a common code base and collaborate much more efficiently.
