Darkness – Psalms 139:12

die Finsternis (pl. -se) – darkness

IPA: [ˈfɪnstɐnɪs]

intensiv ausgeprägte Dunkelheit; (fast) vollständige Abwesenheit von Licht

intense darkness; (almost) complete absence of light

Psalm 139,12 Auch Finsternis würde vor dir nicht verfinstern, und die Nacht würde leuchten wie der Tag, die Finsternis wäre wie das Licht.

Psalms 139:12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

Other Vocabulary

  • verfinstern – to darken, to eclipse, to obfuscate
  • leuchten – to shine, to glow, to gleam

In German, verfinstern is used instead of hide. It gives that additional feeling that the darkness hides by covering something, and provides a nice contrast to the verb leuchten, to shine. To eclipse the sun is die Sonne verfinstern.
